MFA Experience Design program, Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, 2007-2010 and 2013

The Experience Design program was motivated by this question that also reflects a more fundamental shift in Western culture: How will art, craft and design locate relevance with a shift from an object-based culture to an information-based culture? While traditional art and design, such as painting and industrial design, occupy two and three dimensions, the program investigates ‘designing time’. The program formulates a discipline concerned with the temporal interplay between meaning and sensation within immersive experiences. It was structured around the development of hybrid practices and transdisciplinary methodologies. The curriculum consisted of studio- and project-based teaching involving five overlapping areas: Persuasive Experience Design, Environmental Experience Design, Humanitarian Experience Design, Research Methodologies and Future Forecasting. This approach is grounded practice-based research methodologies and research in the Humanities.

My role
I was on the founding faculty of the Experience Design program initiated by Professor Ronald Jones. The program comprises 120 ECTS credits, with 5-12 incoming students per year. Until 2010, I was an active faculty member until 2010 and, in 2013, I was examinor for the last graduating class.

My responsibilities for the program included: contributing to the educational plan and course syllabi, developing course descriptions and procedures, participating in admissions and examinations. I contributed to the Knowledge Foundation (KK-stiftelsen) funded ‘Future of Play’ research project in 2008. My teaching responsibilities included: developing and conducting courses, delivering lectures and supervising thesis work. Courses are detailed separately (see links below) –  in addition to these, I lectured for other courses, notably developing a series of ‘Experience Prototyping’ modules in 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. I supervised 7 MFA theses, which consist of a written essay, an oral exam and exhibition for a large public audience.
