About

I specialize in critical and participatory approaches to design for systems and products that alter social practices and public life. While design is traditionally formulated in relation to industry, my work explores the expansion of design roles in society.

My current work is concerned with: critical futures, through my involvement in a book on feminist spatial practices and the project UTOPIA NOW HERE at the Istanbul Design Biennial; social innovation, through case studies of design in Europe, the US and South Africa, and; socially- and politically-engaged design, through the DESIGN ACT series of public events and book with Iaspis / Swedish Arts Grants Committee.

Documenting these and other projects, this website collects my activities as a design researcher and educator.

I am currently Adjunct Professor at Konstfack University College of Arts Crafts and Design, where I am assistant director of the PhD program in collaboration with KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and I teach in the MFA Design program. I also teach at KTH in the multi-departmental MSc Sustainable Urban Planning and Design program. Until recently, I was a senior researcher and project leader at the Interactive Institute Swedish ICT, which has pioneered artistic and design research in ICT addressing societal challenges. At the institute, I directed, secured funding, and managed over 6 major practice-based research projects involving researchers and professionals from across the arts and humanities, social and technical sciences, and partners from academic, industrial and public sectors. I am an expert on artistic- and design-led research and, in 2014 and 2015, I am international secretariat for the Swedish PhD Faculty for Design Research and Research Education (Designfakulteten). My qualifications have earned degrees including Docent / Associate Professor (2013) and PhD (2007) in Interaction Design from Malmö University. My previous education spans the applied arts and design (MA 2000 Royal College of Art UK), architecture and humanities (BA Columbia University US). Previously, I was a designer and architect in consultancy and corporate sectors in the UK, US and France.

I am committed to building quality, criticality and diversity within the design research community. I have pursued this through a variety of community-building activities and positions – for example, I am active on program committees and as a reviewer for leading, international design, HCI and research publications and conferences. An author and editor of four books on design and research, I have been an author on over twenty book chapters, journal articles and conference papers.
